Gwent is a game where two armies lock in mortal struggle on the field of battle. The goal is to win two battles against the opponent. Wins are tallied in "half-crowns", shown to the right of each player's field strength. One half is acquired with each win, and winning both wins the entire match.

Making a Deck

A legal Gwent deck contains the following:

  • 1 Leader card
  • Minimum of 22 cards and a maximum of 40
  • Each card's Faction must correspond with the deck's Leader card or be Neutral
  • For Bronze cards, a maximum of three copies of a card
  • For Silver cards, only six total, with no copies
  • For Gold cards, only four total, with no copies

Beginning a Game

Note: "Battles" and "rounds" are synonymous and used interchangeably in the game.

At the start of a match, each player draws 10 cards from their deck. Before the match begins, players may choose to return up to three cards (two originally in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt) in order to redraw. These 10 cards are the player's hand for the entire match, and they cannot draw any more except through effects.

  • Whoever wins the previous battle will start the next battle.
  • At the beginning of the second battle, each player draws two random cards from their deck.
  • If a third battle is needed, each player draws a single random card from their deck prior to beginning.

The Basics

  • A single turn consists of playing a card, using a Leader ability, or passing. Passing means you are done for the remainder of that battle and will not make any more plays. If both players pass, the battle ends and all units on the battlefield are sent to the Graveyard.
    • Passing is accomplished by holding the left mouse button over the "coin".
  • The field is made up of three rows: Melee, Ranged, and Siege. Units may only be placed in their corresponding rows. This can be located on the card on the left-hand side with an icon below the card's numerical strength value.
    • Cards can be selected by left-clicking. The corresponding row will become highlighted. Players merely left-click again to have it automatically placed. Right-clicking or clicking on another card will cancel the selection.
  • While on the Battlefield, units add their Strength values to the player's total score. At the end of the battle, the player with the highest total score wins. If both players have the same score at the end of a battle, both players lose.
    • It is suggested that a high-strength card be the first play, as the opponent will have to attempt matching or exceeding the strength.
    • Strength is tracked per row, and then combined in a number to the left of the "crowns".
    • If a card's strength is reduced to zero, it is sent to the player's graveyard and its strength is removed from the player's total.
  • The player that wins two out of three battles wins the match.

Notes

  • Golden cards, identified by their gold borders, are immune to most spells and effects.
